Styles of Privacy Fences

Vertical Side-by-Side

The most common style of privacy fence is the vertical side-by-side. We start by setting the posts, which can be made of either wood or metal, in 2-3ft of concrete depending on the terrain. We then use screws to attach three horizontal 2x4s to the posts, which gives us an extremely solid base. From there we use pickets of varying widths placed vertically, side-by-side one another, and we use a nail-gun to drive two galvanized ring shank nails into every spot we attach the pickets, for a total of 6 nails in every picket.

This type of fence is popular for its clean and classic look, and it offers privacy and security while still allowing some airflow. Maintenance for vertical side by side fencing can be as simple as the occasional cleaning or pressure washing and staining/sealing to keep your fence standing strong for many years to come.

Vertical Board-on-Board

A board on board fence is a type of fence where the boards are arranged vertically, one after another, with another layer of boards covering the gaps between the boards on the first layer. The overlapping design creates a solid and continuous fence that offers a high level of privacy and security, as it completely blocks the view through the fence.

Board on board fences are popular in residential areas as they provide a visually appealing boundary that not only blocks the view but also reduces noise and wind penetration. They require some maintenance, such as occasional cleaning and staining, to protect them from the Texas weather and prolong their lifespan. Overall, a vertical board on board fence is an attractive and practical option for those looking for a higher level of privacy and security in their fence design.

Horizontal Side-by-Side

Horizontal fences feature stacked boards or panels which run horizontally, rather than vertically like with your average Side-by-Side fence. These fences typically have a modern and sleek appearance that can complement contemporary architecture and landscaping and they can be built at various heights, depending on the desired level of privacy and security.

As with all fences, they require some maintenance, such as the occasional pressure washing and staining/sealing to protect the fence from the elements and extend its lifespan. Overall, a horizontal privacy fence is an excellent option for those looking for a modern and stylish fence design that offers a high level of privacy and security.

Horizontal Board-on-Board

A horizontal board on board fence is a type of fencing that provides maximized privacy and an attractive design. It is built with a series of horizontally placed overlapping boards, with the edges of each board aligned with the center of the board underneath it. This overlapping creates a double layer of boards, with the fence's frame hidden between the layers, which creates a seamless look from either side of the fence and creates a solid, sturdy fence that can withstand wind and other elements for many years to come.

As with all wood fences, in order to keep them strong and beautiful over time, they require occasional maintenance which is as simple as a quick cleaning and staining/sealer applied every few years. Overall, a horizontal board on board fence is an gorgeous and practical option for those looking for a modern, contemporary fence which provides both security and the utmost privacy.

Shadow Box Fence

A shadow box is a type of board on board fence that provides both privacy and an attractive look. They are made with alternating boards that are attached vertically to both sides of the fence posts, and there is typically a small gap between each board, which creates a "shadow box" effect, where the boards overlap and cast shadows on the opposite side of the fence.

Shadow box fences are popular because they offer a stylish and unique look on both sides of the fence, making it a good option for boundary fences. The alternating boards create a visually appealing pattern that can complement the design of a garden or outdoor space. As is the case with all wood fences, regular maintenance including cleaning and staining/sealing is required in order to keep your beautiful shadow box fence standing strong for years in the Texas sun.

Gabion Fence

A gabion fence is made of wire baskets or cages filled with stones or other materials, which are comprised of galvanized steel wire mesh, which is strong and durable enough to withstand the weight of the rocks or other fill material. The baskets or cages can be built to your desired height and the rocks inside the baskets can be of various sizes and colors, giving the fence a unique and natural appearance.

Gabion fences have several advantages over traditional fences as they require little maintenance and are extremely sturdy and long-lasting. They also allow for natural drainage and can be easily repaired if necessary. Gabion fences are often used for landscaping purposes, such as retaining walls or decorative borders, and are a great option for those looking for a durable, low-maintenance fence which provides maximum privacy and security.
